About the Marshall™ 1960B Salt and Pepper · X-Pattern Combination
4×12 Straight · Salt and Pepper Grill · G12H30 + G12M25 · 48 Mix IRs

The Marshall™ 1960B "Salt and Pepper" name comes from the distinctive two-tone grill cloth — one half charcoal/black, one half off-white/grey — that Marshall used on select cabinet runs. Combined with the straight 1960B baffle, this is the lower cab of a standard Marshall stack.

The X-Pattern speaker configuration here pairs two fundamentally different Celestion drivers: the G12H30 Blackback (30W, heavy ceramic magnet) and the G12M25 Blackback (25W, medium ceramic magnet). These are the classic ROLA-era Celestion combination — the heavy-magnet H30 supplies deeper bass extension and aggressive upper-mids, while the lighter-magnet M25 contributes the warm British midrange that defines classic Marshall tone.

Mounted in alternating diagonal positions, the two speaker types cannot be isolated in normal listening — they combine spatially to produce a wider frequency response than either driver achieves in a mono-loaded cabinet. The tonal difference between a 30W and a 25W Celestion is readily audible: the H30 is fuller and bolder, the M25 is more vocal and compressed.

Single-mic IRs are not included. All captures use cross-pattern microphone placement — one carefully chosen position per microphone, with multiple mic pairs set across the G12H30 and G12M25 sides and varying blend ratios, expanded into 48 Mix IRs. This preserves the X-Pattern tone at the capture stage rather than mixing identically-loaded speakers in post. Inside the Salt and Pepper Marshall frame, heavy-magnet and medium-magnet stand side by side, each holding its own contrasting voice.
