The Fender™ Tweed Bassman is one of the most historically significant amplifiers in electric guitar — a circuit that predates rock music itself. First produced in 1952 and reaching its definitive form in the 5F6-A circuit of 1957, the Bassman was originally designed for electric bass, but it was guitarists who discovered its full potential.
The 5F6-A circuit — designed by Leo Fender — runs a 4×10 open-back cabinet with a pair of 6L6 output tubes. Jim Marshall studied the Bassman circuit when designing his early amplifiers in the 1960s; his first production amp is widely described as a modified Bassman. The Bassman is, in this sense, the common ancestor of the British stack.
This IR captures the cabinet loaded with Jensen™ P10Q 10-inch speakers — vintage ceramic-magnet drivers from the Tweed era. The P10Q was the original Fender-specified driver of the period, prized for its bright, glassy top end and natural cone break-up at modest volume levels.
The 4×10 open-back format produces a uniquely broad sonic image — four drivers in a compact open-back enclosure, projecting both forward and to the rear. The result is a wide, ambient tonal character distinct from the focused punch of closed 4×12 cabinets — a foundational palette for American clean, blues, and country.
